Police probe process: CJP forms body led by ex-IGP Shigri

Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar Tuesday constituted a committee headed by former Inspector General of Police Afzal Ali Shigri regarding improvements in police investigation process. The committee was directed to file the terms of reference (ToR) regarding the matter in 15 days.
Earlier, the Chief Justice chaired a meeting of retired and serving IGPs at Supreme Court Islamabad. The meeting was attended by former IGPs including Syed Masood Shah, Tariq Pervaiz, Shoukat Javed, Afzal Ali Shigri, Tariq Khosa, Iftikhar Ahmed, Shoaib Suddle, Fayaz Toru, Asad Jahangir and serving IGPs Arif Nawaz, IGP Punjab, AD Khawaja, IGP Sindh, Salahuddin, IGP KPK, Moazzam Jah, IGP Balochistan and Azam Taimori (IGP-ICT).
Talking on the issue of police investigation in criminal cases, the Chief Justice told the participants that it has been observed that in majority of criminal cases, police investigation is improper and substandard and drastic improvements are needed so that criminal cases in courts can withstand judicial scrutiny. The Chief Justice asked them to deliberate upon the issue and suggest ways and means to bring improvements in the system.
