LHC directs ECP to allot symbol 'bat' to PTI candidate

10 Jul, 2018

The Lahore High Court directed the Election Commission of Pakistan to allot bat as election symbol to PTI candidate Raza Nasrullah Ghumman contesting election from NA-105, Faisalabad. The petitioner had approached the court against non-allotment of bat as election symbol. He said there was no legal bar in allotment of election symbol but so far he was not allotted any symbol.
The court passed the orders after a representative of ECP told the court that the process of printing of ballot papers had not been started yet.
The LHC reserved its verdict in a petition against PML-N candidate Sheikh Waqas Akram for NA-115, Jhang. A voter Muhammad Imran had moved the petition alleging that Akram had obtained a fake degree. He also failed to mention complete detail of his assets in his nomination papers. He asked the court to declare him ineligible to contest elections.
The LHC also issued notices to both sides on a petition challenging nomination papers of PML-N candidate Imran Khalid Butt for PP-54, Gujranwala for Tuesday (today).
Petitioner Loqman Sajid, a voter, had challenged the candidature of Imran Khalid Butt for not mentioning complete details of his wife' assets in his nomination papers. He said he concealed many other details and asked the court to set aside appellate tribunal's decision allowing him to contest election. The LHC also reserved its verdict on maintainability of a petition questioning acceptance of nomination papers of PML-N candidate Ahmad Ali Aulakh for PP-250, Layyah. Sheikh Muhammad Ameen, petitioner, said Ahmad Ali Aulakh concealed details of his assets.
He said the respondent did not meet the criteria set by Articles 62 and 63 and asked the court to bar him from contesting election. The court after hearing arguments of the petitioner's counsel reserved verdict on maintainability of the petition.
