Collapse of swing: SHC seeks reply from park management

A divisional bench of Sindh High Court (SHC) on Tuesday ordered the management of Askari Park to submit its reply by August 09 when it sought the time in a case pertaining to collapse of a mechanical swing, killing one girl and wounding many others. The bench took up the petition of social activist Imran Shahzad, in which Askari Park management, Mayor Karachi, Sindh Government and others were made respondents. The petition prayed for restraining use of Askari Park for commercial purposes.
Deputy Commissioner East and Police submitted a report in the court about the untoward incident. The report recommended that workability, fitness and safety of the entire rides installed in Askari Park Karachi should be inspected and checked before re-opening the park by technical team including members from KMC, SBCA and Professor from some renowned University.
It also urged for well defined SOPs of operation and stressed that maintenance of all rides should be prepared and followed as per international standards and regularly inspected by respective teams on those parameters. It also suggested daily preventive maintenance schedule in line with the manufacturer's recommendations should be followed. Calibration equipment, calibration procedure and scheduling is essential, it suggested.
