MMA to sit on opposition benches: JI leader

The decision makers of the MMA and the Jamaat-e-Islami have decided to sit on the opposition benches and support every effort to protect the constitution and the democratic system, Secretary General of the JI and the MMA, Liaqat Baloch, said here on Saturday.
In a statement here, he said that tensions in politics and expression of strong views against one another always created problems. He said that Imran Khan and the opposition parties both were facing internal criticism. He said that the political process was neither static nor it could afford entering into a blind alley. As such, the fresh strategy was devised keeping in view the latest situation and developments.
Liaqat Baloch said that the MMA and other opposition parties were protesting against the rigging in the elections. He said that the opposition parties would field their joint candidates for the Prime Minister, the NA Speaker and Deputy Speaker to play their role in the democratic process regardless of the election result and added that a strong opposition would keep the government on the right track.
He said that all the decisions in the opposition parties were taken through consultation and consensus and the decision regarding the Opposition Leader would also be taken through consensus.
He said that traditionally, the leader of the Opposition was from the party which had the highest number of members in the opposition. Liaqat strongly condemned the attacks on girls' schools in Diamer and said this was in fact an attack on knowledge and the nation's future. He demanded of the government to expose the elements behind these attacks and deterrent punishment for them.
