'ECP should not taint Imran's victory over minor issues'

09 Aug, 2018

Election Commission of Pakistan should not taint Prime Minister in waiting Imran Khan's election victory and his credibility on minor issues as the nation is already facing daunting economic, political and diplomatic issues, former Secretary ECP & Chairman, National Democratic Foundation Kunwar Dilshad has said.
In an interview he said that ECP has issued conditional notification for Khan's oath as a member of the National Assembly subject to the decision of a pending litigation against him over alleged violation of the ECP's code of conduct. However PTI has already clarified that chairman Imran Khan had to stamp the ballot paper publicly as he couldn't go behind the voting screen to cast his vote in secrecy due to the presence of a large number of people and media in the room.
Former Secretary ECP said that secrecy of vote is not a big issue due to which notification of the country's most popular leader's success could be put on hold. He said Imran Khan has injected 'fresh blood' into national politics which has been monopolized for decades by feudal lords and capitalists. The decision of ECP about conditional notification will not effect Prime minister's election
Professor of Political Science in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, LUMS Dr Rasul Bakhsh Rais has said that the in coming government will have to face many challenges which are too complex and deep-rooted. First and foremost is the economy. It is overburdened by debt servicing which is not possible to honour repayment without procuring more debts in the short term. The fiscal deficit between imports and exports has reached a historic high, around $35 billion that speaks a lot about our trade policies, stagnant export base and the liberal imports policies. Our tax-to-GDP ratio at about 8.5-9 per cent is one of the lowest in the world that continuously forces the governments to borrow domestically and internally, even to build roads, highways and motorways.
He said more disgusting is the fact that state run entities, like PIA, the PSM and power distribution companies cause around an estimated Rs 3 trillion of losses because of overstaffing, inefficiencies and systemic corruptions.
In the meanwhile, observers have noted PPP leader Khurshid Shah's latest stance that PPP would provide Imran Khan ample space to run government as the PPP has big stake in the continuation of democratic process and peaceful transfer of power.
