Renowned legal expert Anwar Mansoor Khan is likely to replace Khalid Jawed as new attorney general for Pakistan. The news of Anwar Mansoor becoming new attorney general flashed on state-run Pakistan Television (PTV) and the private TV channels. However, neither incumbent AGP Barrister Khalid Jawed Khan nor Anwar Mansoor denied the development.
The sources said that notification of Anwar's appointment as new AGP will be issued tomorrow (Monday). Anwar Mansoor was appointed in December 2009 as attorney general, but had resigned in protest when the then federal law minister (Babar Awan) refused to provide him documents related to NRO case. In his resignation sent to the Prime Minister office, Anwar maintained that law minister and the Ministry of Law were not cooperating with him, alleging them of neglecting their duties deliberately. "In view of the situation, I found myself unable to perform my duties and am resigning from the office under the Article 100 of Constitution," Khan had written in his resignation.
Anwar Mansoor had also represented former military dictator General Pervez Musharraf (retd) in high treason case and defended him for two months in the Special Court. He also remained the counsel for Dr Asim Hussain, who was booked on the complaint of the Rangers for allegedly treating and harboring suspected terrorists, militants and gangsters at his hospital.
Barrister Khalid Jawed Khan was appointed as attorney general for Pakistan (AGP) on June 21, 2018, replacing Ashtar Ausaf. He had actively participated in the 2007 lawyers' movement for restoration of judiciary in the country and wrote many articles against the Provisional Constitution Order promulgated by Musharraf.
