The Lahore High Court on Tuesday directed the Punjab inspector general of police to strictly implement restriction of wearing helmets by motorcyclists in whole province. A bar member Syed Kamal Haider, sought the court's directions for the enforcement of traffic laws across the province and contended that a report by World Health Organisation (WHO) revealed that in Pakistan 25 deaths per 100,000 occur due to road accidents, which was much higher than international ranking.
He asked the court to direct the police to implement all traffic laws including wearing of helmets through out the province. He also sought direction for fixation prices of helmets to restrain profiteers from extorting money from the public.
He also asked the court to directed Pemra to launch an awareness campaign among the citizen about traffic laws. The court after hearing the petitioner directed the IGP to strictly implement the traffic laws and submit a compliance report within a week.
