The Supreme Court on Monday ordered legal proceedings against a policeman for committing perjury. A three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, was hearing a murder case in which false evidence was given. ASI Khizar Hayat, who was summoned by the court over allegations of giving false account of a murder incident, appeared before the bench.
"You were on duty in Wahdat Colony Lahore but you became a witness in a murder incident in Narowal," the Chief Justice asked from the ASI. He replied that he had given statement on the oath. "Giving false account of an incident on oath is a crime. You should have fear of God, if not the fear of people," Justice Khosa said. "Being a policeman you gave false testimony," he added.
The entire witness account is rejected if a part of the statement proves false, the Chief Justice said. "Either you were not on duty on the day or you have such sharp eyesight that you saw the incident in Narowal while sitting in Lahore," the Chief Justice said. The Chief Justice observed that the law recommends life imprisonment for the offenders of perjury. The bench sent the matter to Sessions Judge Narowal with the directives of legal action against the ASI accused of perjury.
