Former Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani on Friday said he had gifted cars to former President Asif Ali Zardari and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif as per law and had not committed any illegality. Gilani, while talking to media persons after appearing before the Combined Investigation Team (CIT) of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in connection with the fake bank accounts scam, said what he had done in his tenure was as per law.
"I gifted one car each to Zardari, Sharif and former President Farooq Leghari," he said, adding he had given a car to Sharif following his request. The former premier recorded his statement with respect to import of four vehicles.
He said NAB had levelled allegation against him that payment of import duty/taxes on cars gifted to Zardari and Sharif was made from a fake bank account. Gilani said he had sought a summary regarding import of vehicles from the Prime Minister Office but so far it had not been provided to him.
The former prime minister said he had been remained in jail for five years under NAB law and later had been acquitted of charges. He advised the government to allow opposition parties to play their due role.
When asked whether the opposition was seeking any National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), he said, "We do not need any NRO."
During the previous appearance, the NAB team had handed over Gilani a questionnaire.
The NAB has so far recorded the statements of Asif Ali Zardari, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah, former Chief Minister Sindh Qaim Ali Shah and former caretaker Chief Minister Sindh Fazalur Rehman with respect to the fake bank accounts scam.
