Mainstreaming madrasas

01 May, 2019

It is a matter of great satisfaction that the government has finally decided to take control of a network of over 30,000 madrasas as part of a drive to "mainstream" the madrasas by bringing them under state control.
It appears that the government has taken due care in this regard as Islamic education will continue to be provided and religious schools will come under the purview of the ministry of education and incorporate other subjects into their syllabus.
"The benefit will be that when children grow and leave these institutions they will have the same career opportunities that those coming from a private school have," Maj-Gen Asif Ghafoor has been quoted as saying. Both civilian and military leadership deserve praise for taking this historic step.
It is therefore hoped that a legislation in this regard would be presented in parliament anytime soon.
