"It is really heartening that US President Donald Trump has recognized the Kashmir dispute as one of the world's longest-festering political issues and is willing to mediate between India and Pakistan to find a solution to the dispute."
This was stated by Syed Jawaid Iqbal, Chairman, Society for Global Moderation (SGM), a private-sector think tank founded in 2003 to strengthen tolerance, interfaith harmony and democracy in society.
President Donald Trump expressed his willingness to mediate on the issue at a joint press conference that he held with Prime Minister Imran Khan of Pakistan during the latter's visit to the White House on July 22, 2019.
Jawaid Iqbal also appreciated the response of the Prime Minister of Pakistan. Imran Khan had told President Trump at the press conference that his gesture of using his influence to solve the Kashmir issue would earn for him the prayers of billions of people in the region.
Syed Jawaid Iqbal is of the view that if President Trump successfully mediates the Kashmir issue, he could be considered as a strong candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize as this would be a major achievement on his part and his name would be recorded in history as a true saviour of humanity.
Jawaid Iqbal also welcomed President Trump's positive response to the invitation extended to him by Prime Minister Imran Khan to visit Pakistan.
The SGM chairman said that the fact that the US President had graciously accepted the invitation to visit Pakistan in the near future indicated that he was genuinely concerned about peace returning to the region after decades of turmoil and that he was willing to make a personal contribution towards achieving such peace.
The SGM chairman said the government and people of Pakistan would be immensely grateful to the US President for mediating on Kashmir and will also have the honour of extending their warm hospitality to President Trump when he visits Pakistan.-PR
