Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is seeking ways to enhance revenue collection. The steps include hike in the rent of its shops to mitigate the monetary challenges.
Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Syed Saif-ur-Rehman said that the civic body is facing financial problems and hence asking the official concerned to make efforts to increase revenue. Any negligence or failure in achieving the set revenue targets by departments will not be tolerated.
Chairing the meeting of revenue departments in KMC head office Tuesday, Saif-ur-Rehman asked the officers concerned to work in a transparent manner and come up with suggestions for enhancing revenue resources.
The rent of shops in KMC markets will be enhanced in accordance with the market rates for which tenants will be issued notices in coordination with the legal department, he added.
The metropolitan commissioner also reviewed the performance of each department and made comparison with past financial years' recoveries and current targets.
He directed that a committee should be constituted for issuance of next contract for Alladin Park. He said the parks department should revise the rates for license on fair rent and issue notice to the nursery owners. He said that in order to increase revenue, the modification committee should include a focal person from the concerned department.
Saif took notice of the non-recovery of revenue and directed that notices must be issued to defaulters. "We have no option but to seek ways to improve the revenue recovery which would help us deliver better municipal services to citizens," he said.
He also reviewed the performance of various departments including estate, parks and horticulture, recreation, Katchi Abadis, charged parking and municipal utility tax charges. He issued directive to the officers concerned.
