Although self-driving cars have become a hype in recent times, automaker Ford believes that the firm has ‘overestimated’ the arrival of those autonomous cars.

American automobile manufacturer Ford’s CEO Jim Hackett recently put brakes on hopes of the company’s plans for self-driving cars, admitting that the first vehicles will have limits, reported Bloomberg.

Hackett, who once headed the firm’s autonomous vehicle division, expressed, “We overestimated the arrival of autonomous vehicles.” Though Ford is still firm on its plans to launch self-driving cars by 2021 that will eventually change the world, Hackett mentioned that ‘its applications will be narrow, what we call geo-fenced, because the problem is so complex.”

Despite the fact that Hackett walked back on immediate plans for autonomous vehicles, he did mention that he believed in the technology’s potential. He asserted, “When we bring this thing to market, it’s going to be really powerful.”

Moreover, apart from Ford, numerous other automobile makers are focused on introducing self-driving cars sooner or later while some of them have even started testing them. These firms include Tesla, Uber, Waymo and more.
