Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) filed on Thursday a petition in the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) challenging the appointment of Maryam Nawaz as one of the vice-presidents of Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N).

The petition was filed by Barrister Malika Bukhari, Farrukh Habib, Kanwal Shauzab and Javeria Zafar. The PTI's petition states that Maryam’s appointment as a PML-N vice-president is in contradiction with the constitution and law of the land.

The petition also states that the PML-N leader has been declared disqualified for any political or public office.

Following the appointment of Maryam as one of the vice=presidents, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi had said that the party was considering challenging the PML-N’s decision to appoint a party post to a convicted person.

The minister had further said that they will either approach the ECP or the country's courts. On May 3, PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif had approved the appointment of Maryam as one of the party's vice-presidents. The party head has also appointed his son Hamza Shehbaz as vice presidents of PML-N.
