GENEVA: UN envoy Kofi Anna has askedSyria to definitively halt using heavy weapons to quash anti-regime protests, his spokesman said Sunday.

"The Syrian government must once and for all stop using heavy weapons and withdraw them from population centres," Ahmad Fawzi said in a statement from adding Annan welcomed a UN plan to send 300 unarmed ceasefire observers.
