The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) has ensured that it is closely monitoring the situation in the Middle East after tensions between the United States and Iran soared when the top Iranian commander Major General Qassem Soleimani was killed by the US.

MOFA Spokesperson Aisha Farooqui, while speaking to Arab News, said that Pakistan will do everything to guarantee the safety of its nationals in Iraq. "We are watching the situation in the Middle East closely, which also includes the safety of our people there," she said.

On Friday, US said that it killed Soleimani in a drone strike in Baghdad. US President Donald Trump ordered the attack and said the Quds commander had been planning an imminent attack on US diplomats and forces in Iraq.

Soleimani was the head of his country’s elite Al Quds force. Following the airstrike and death of its leader, Iran promised 'harsh revenge'.
