'Hindu radical fires at anti-BJP government protesters': It was a breaking news on India's multiple TV channels on Saturday. A Hindu nationalist opened fire at an anti-government protest in India's capital on Saturday, just days after an armed teenager shot and injured a student at a rally in the same city. The gunman fired into a large crowd of female demonstrators at a non-stop protest in New Delhi against prime minister Narendra Modi's contentious citizenship law that clearly discriminates against Muslims. Critics of this law have plausibly argued that this creates a religious test for nationality in a so-called secular country and along with a mooted national registry will marginalise its 200 million minority community.
Not only is Opposition demonised in today's India, Muslims are largely being portrayed by India's ultra right-wing media as fifth columnists or a threat to BJP government's plan to turn India into a Hindu rashtra. Where are David Miliband et al who are greatly impressed by India's democratic credentials?
