  • A regular rickshaw can also be converted to an electric three-wheeler, says the company.
  • As per the company, the battery will be charged in 5 hours, and can drive for 175Km with passengers.

Pakistan first locally produced electric rickshaw will be introduced into the market after the government announce its Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy, informed the company.

“The electric rickshaw will enter the market, as soon as the government announced its EV policy,” informed Mian Ali of Sazgar Engineering Works, quoted BBC Urdu.

Last month, local three-wheeler assembler Sazgar Engineering Works introduced Pakistan’s first electric rickshaw, which drew attention of the masses eager to learn more about the new eco-friendly mode of transport.

The company’s official informed that a regular rickshaw can also be converted to an electric three-wheeler, by replacing its engine with a battery and insertion of motor and controller.

The entire rickshaw has been manufactured and designed in Pakistan, apart from its battery, motor and controller that can also be manufactured in the country, said Ali. “Electric battery manufacturing facility would be setup in Pakistan as soon as the EV policy is introduced, this would allow the entire product to be build in the country,” he said.

Revealing the mechanics behind the electric three-wheeler, the company informed that instead of an engine the rickshaw has a battery, which is monitored by a controller

As per specifications, the battery of Sazgar electric three-wheeler is designated as EcoRik Li-Ion Battery, with powering 48V, 125Ah, and 6kwh.  As per the company, the battery will be charged in 5 hours, and can drive for 175Km with passengers.

Being an electric rickshaw, means that the three-wheeler would not produce any emissions and there will also be no annual maintenance cost and fuel cost like in other rickshaws.

“Unlike other three-wheelers there are no moving parts in this rickshaw, the only moving part are the wheels as it runs on a battery. Therefore there would be a lot of savings on maintenance and fuel cost," said Sazgar Engineering Director Mian Ammar.
