The CDC emphasizes that cloth face masks should be used by the general public to conserve surgical masks or N-95 respirators for medical workers.
Earlier, speaking during a show on "Good Morning America", Dr Adams said his office, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization all originally agreed that healthy people did not need to wear masks based on the best available science.
Adams said he asked the CDC to re-evaluate this recommendation to see whether or not mask-wearing would prevent transmission of the disease.
