Cameron wants Britain to put ‘best foot forward’ for the Olympics

28 Jul, 2012

The mega-event commenced on Friday night with the Opening Ceremony at the Olympic Stadium in Stratford.

Earlier, Cameron was led by London 2012 chairman Sebastian Coe on a final tour of the Olympic Park before the start of the Games.

In a press conference outside the Olympic Stadium, he emphasized the importance of the competition to Britain.

“Let’s put our best foot forward,” the Prime Minister said.

“We're an amazing country with fantastic things to offer. This is a great moment for us,
let’s seize it. The worries we all have are the great hopes and fears,” he said.

“Our fingers are crossed for everything from the events to the weather to the transport
infrastructure and everything else. But, from where I stand, I think we're set for a really
remarkable few weeks for Britain.”

The Prime Minister also said that London 2012 was a vital event to enhance Britain’s
reputation across the globe and to show that the Olympics was an event that should involved
the whole of the United Kingdom, not just the capital.

"Of course, this is a time of some economic difficulty for the UK, everybody knows that,"
said Cameron.

"But look at what we’re capable of achieving as a nation, even at a difficult economic
time,” he added.

"In terms of the country coming together, I think the Torch Relay really demonstrates that
this is not a London Games, this is not an England Games, this is a United Kingdom Games,"
he concluded.
