KARACHI: Carla Bruni-Sarkozy has been heavily criticized for her remark that the concept of feminism was not needed in today’s world.

The singer/song writer and wife of former French president Nicholas Sarkozy went on to claim that she is a bourgeoisie and loves to carry out her home and work commitments simultaneously. According to sources she believes that feminist were pioneers who have cleared the difficult path for women today.

The remarks prompted French feminist group “Osez le feminisme!” to create an uproar by inviting people to respond to Bruni-Sarkozy’s comment under the hashtag #CherCarlaBruni (Dear Carla Bruni).

There was no stopping, the French senator, Laurence Rossignol (@laurossignol) twitted, "For as long as I get asked if I am the senator's assistant, the coming generation will need feminism."

According to media sources, the government spokesperson and women’s rights minister also stated that everyone needs to be a feminist.

Playing on the issue of women getting paid less than men even in this day and age one user commented, "My generation needs feminism because I am on sale for a 27 percent discount all year round."
