One of the supercomputers in China has doubled its power making itself more efficient.

Satoshi Matsuoka, the head of Matsuoka Lab announced about the supercomputer Tianhe-2 that now performs at an astounding 949.7 trillion calculations per second (94.97 petaflops) in comparison to its previous version that performed at 549.0 trillion calculations per seconds (54.9 petaflops).

For the upgrade, the 2013 coprocessor chips were swapped with domestic chips. Previously, Intel’s Knights Corner Xeon Phi coprocessor chips were used in the computers and it was initially planned to upgrade the system through upgraded Intel chips. But, with US blocking the export of these chips, China was forced to manufacture their own chips. As a result, they successfully matched the power of Intel chips with the Matrix-2000 GPDSP accelerators, reported Futurism.

Supercomputers are likely to alter law enforcement, national defense, scientific research and human life expectancy as well. With a race to enlarge the supercomputing powers, China seemingly holds the prominent lead by acquiring the first two spots because of their two fastest computers and is far ahead of the rest, wrote Recode.
