Now find a law to rob me of my name as well: Nawaz Sharif

In response to Supreme Court's (SC) verdict of removing his name as president and party head of Pakistan Muslim Leag
Published February 22, 2018

In response to Supreme Court's (SC) verdict of removing his name as president and party head of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), deposed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that if judiciary wants, they should use a black law dictionary and snatch his name as well.

Speaking to the media outside an accountability court for Avenfield reference hearing on Thursday, Sharif said that first he was removed as prime minister after the Panama Papers case verdict and now he had been removed as the president of his party. ''Now if they want to snatch my name they can search for any law and snatch that as well," he said.

He further said that the SC verdict was not an unexpected one for him. He said that yesterday's decision was also based on Iqama (foreign work permit) reason and that the judiciary wanted to disqualify him for life. '' All decisions of the SC are Nawaz Sharif specific."

On Wednesday, the SC in its verdict had said that that a disqualified politician cannot lead a political party. The apex court ordered to remove Sharif from presidency of his PML-N party and also asked the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to remove his name as the party president from its record. Later on the same day ECP followed the orders and removed Sharif's name from its record.

SC rules ousted PM Sharif cannot lead his party

Sharif was disqualified by the SC last year in July from his position as prime minister as well as lost his party's presidency. However, after the Elections Act 2017 he was re-elected as the PML-N president.

Following the Election Acts, political parties including Pakistan Peoples Party, Awami Muslim League and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf petitioned the apex court to look into the controversial law. The SC had then begun the disqualification hearing.
