The Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Saqib Nisar has summoned former Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senator Nehal Hashmi on March 7 (tomorrow) pertaining to contempt of court.

According to local media reports, the CJP has also asked for the transcript of the speech which Hashmi made prior to his jail release. The CJP also observed that the bench will examine whether his punishment term will be extended due to Hashmi's speech.

On his release from one month imprisonment on February 28, Hashmi had used abusive language and also lamented that he had been made a target of revenge because he had stood by deposed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

SC reserves judgment in Nehal Hashmi contempt case

For his fiery speech in May targeting the judiciary and the joint investigation team members, who were probing offshore accounts of Sharif family, the SC took a suo motu notice of Hashmi's speech. The SC barred Hashmi from holding public office for a period of five years and sent him to jail for a month. The three judge bench, headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, had also slapped a fine of Rs.50,000 on him. After SC’s verdict Hashmi was taken into custody.
