Yet another strange sea creature washes ashore

The sea is filled with bizarre creatures and few days back yet another dead mysterious sea animal washed up on beaches, confusing the locals over what it is.

Remains of a 20-feet weird sea creature washed up in Namibia last week and left experts baffled over whether the carcass belonged to a whale or a dolphin, since it looked like both of them.

Although initially the scientists had no idea about what the animal was, it was later identified to be a Cuvier’s beaked whale. The animal is a unique deep-diving species of whale that hasn’t been seen in the country for the past 18 years, said an investigator with the Namibian Dolphin project, Simon Elwen.

Mysterious dead sea creature sparks fear of bad luck among residents

“On first sighting we had no idea what species it was. The carcass of this animal was in an advanced state of decomposition - making it look rather unlike whale and there were several confused reports on social media. I was quite surprised. These animals are rarely seen in the water, so to see them on land is very unique,” Elwen told Daily Mail.

The remains found in Namibia were too decomposed to figure out the cause of its death. However, the experts gathered samples to understand more about the mammal. “The team collected a number of samples including the skull of the animal, which will be used for further research,” said Elwen.

Though they have rarely been witnessed, these creatures are said to be very common and it is believed that there are almost 100,000 of them living in the oceans globally. These creatures grow up to 23ft long and weigh up to 3,090kg. Because of their ‘goose-like’ head with a signature slanted jawline, these creatures can be easily distinguished.

Cuvier’s beaked whales reside incredibly deep in oceans - almost 3,300ft, which is why they are not often sighted. They even hold the record for the longest and deepest known mammal drive. Since they live in depths, not much is known about these creatures, reported Science Alert.
