LG confirms its next smartphone’s entire display will serve as speaker
Smartphone maker LG has been giving small details about its next G8 ThinQ phone that will incorporate some exciting new features, one of which is that the screen will be a speaker itself.
LG recently announced about a new audio feature that its G8 ThinQ will consist, which will let the phone’s entire OLED display to vibrate in order to work as a speaker, a feature it calls Crystal Sound OLED (CSO).
According to LG, the CSO re-purposes the OLED display as a diaphragm, vibrating the entire surface to ‘produce sound with impressive volume’. This lead to improve in clarity, making voices ‘easier to discern and subtle musical notes more noticeable’.
LG’s next smartphone might have a second attachable screen
The LG G8 ThinQ will still feature a bottom-facing speaker for louder use cases such as speakerphone calls, and this can be paired with the top part of the screen for 2-channel stereo sound.
Meanwhile, LG has already confirmed that the G8 ThinQ will come in with a front-facing 3D camera with a time-of-flight sensor. Whereas, some rumors hint that there might also be an optional second screen accessory, wrote The Verge.
LG plans to introduce its G8 ThinQ in full at the Mobile World Congress 2019 to be held later this month.
“Our commitment to driving smartphone audio to new heights is on clear display in LG G8 ThinQ,” said Chang Ma, senior vice president and head of product strategy at LG. “By developing new technologies as well as working closely in partnership with the audio industry’s best partners, LG will continue to deliver the quality of sound that consumers demand and deserve.”
