Senate passes resolution to withdraw references against judges
The Senate passed on Friday a resolution demanding to withdraw a reference filed against Supreme Court's (SC) Judge Qazi Faez Isa and Sindh High Court Judge K K Agha.
The resolution was moved by Pakistan Muslim league - Nawaz leader and Leader of the Opposition Raja Zafar-ul-Haq, local media reported. The resolution states that the reference has been filed in a secretive manner without bringing it to the notice of the judges.
The opposition in their resolution says that these references are a direct attack on the independence of the judiciary and is 'aimed at stifling the voices of reason, truth and justice in the judiciary'. The opposition expresses solidarity with the judges, and called upon the government to withdraw the references.
Earlier, a reference was filed against Judge Isa and Judge Agha with the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) under Article 209 of the Constitution. The SC's judge has been accused of acquiring three properties in London on lease in the name of his wife and children and not disclosing them in his wealth statements.
Whereas, Judge Agha has been accused of purchasing two properties in London.
