The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Wednesday challenged government's stance with regard to Nawaz Sharif's health and made his medical reports public insisting that the reports had already been submitted to the courts as well as to the Punjab government.
Speaking at a news conference, senior party leader Musadik Malik criticised the government for sending letter to the British government for repatriation of the former prime minister, adding that Nawaz Sharif was suffering from "serious" cardiac issues. He said that the surgery of Nawaz Sharif was postponed three times due to his instable health condition, adding that the doctors in London had first fixed the date for January 31, 2020, then February 6, 2020 and then for February 13, 2020. Now the new date for his surgery is being finalised, Malik added.
He said that there were two major reasons behind the postponement of the surgery, adding the first reason was that the doctor had stated that his health condition needed to be stable before going for surgery. The second reason, according to him, was that his daughter Maryam Nawaz should be with him when he was going for such a "major" surgery. "The two reasons are behind the postponement of his surgery, as he desires that his daughter is there with him when he is going for the surgery," Malik asserted.
"We hope that we will get the justice [getting permission to Maryam to go abroad]. Even if justice is denied, we all desire that the surgery is not further delayed and it be conducted in due time, when it is finalized," he said, adding that the final decision would be taken by Nawaz Sharif himself.
Malik also rejected the government stance that Sharif family had not submitted the medical reports of Nawaz Sharif. He also shared copies of the medical reports, which according to him, were submitted to the government. "These are four to five [medical] reports that have been submitted on many occasions to the Lahore High Court (LHC), the Islamabad High Court (IHC) and the Punjab government. But the government adviser, who is the spokesperson of the government, is making statements to the media that the reports have not been submitted," Malik stated, while showing the copies of the reports to the media persons.
According to the report of Nawaz Sharif, prepared by David Lawrence, consultant cardiothoracic surgeon at David Lawrence Consultants Ltd, 88 Harley Street, London, "the impression is of compromised heart blood supply and functionality particularly in the circumflex territory". "I recommend that Mr. Sharif undergoes coronary angiography at the earliest as there is a significant part of his heart at risk. I strongly recommend urgent coronary intervention. Failure to do this could compromise his myocardium, his cardiac health, and his well-being," Dr Lawrence stated in the report of the 4th and 21st December 2019 and of 13th January 2020, and stated Nawaz Sharif requires care and supervision under clinical team and would require to stay in UK for the time being.
The doctor further wrote that Sharif had sought an opinion from the Royal Brampton and Harefield Hospital for cardiovascular management. "He [Sharif] had cardiac non-invasive studies to establish disease extent and progression. His echocardiogram shows left ventricular hypertrophy and dysfunction (EF 49 percent) and aortic value disease (mild AS). He then underwent cardiac stress PET/CT scan results indicative of signiofant areas of ischemia more pronounced on stress. There is extensive inducible ischemia involving the basal anterior and anterolateral regions of the myocardium and separate area of moderate inducible ischemia involving mid to basal infers lateral myocardium extending into the inferior wall."
"The perfusion reserve is significantly reduced in typical circumflex distribution and also in the vessel supplying basal anterolateral myocardium. There is also appearance of the transient ischemic dilatation suggesting significant ischemic burden that amounts approximately 22 percent of the myocardium," the report further stated.
Malik insisted that the reports were verified by doctor, notary public and the British Foreign Office as well as the Pakistan High Commission in London. He alleged that the government was giving misstatement with regard to the reports of Nawaz Sharif and the disease he was suffering from.
Malik said that the board of doctors in Pakistan was formed by the government itself and the same board had found the low platelets. He said that Sharif suffered the first heart attack at jail and the second at Mayo Hospital in Lahore, adding that the same board had decided that Sharif should be sent abroad for his treatment.
Another PML-N leader Attaullah Tarar insisted that the letter written to the British government was "illegal", adding that Sharif traveled abroad after the IHC approved his bail on health grounds.
To a question, he said that opposition leader Shahbaz Sharif will comeback soon, adding that he was issuing instructions to the party on daily basis from abroad. Responding to another query, Tarar expressed his inability to confirm or deny any meeting between Nawaz Sharif and former interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.
