iftikhar-muhammad-chaudhryISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry Wednesday stated that the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) needs a full time chairman in order to improve its performance and to overcome current financial losses.

While heading a three-judge bench during the hearing of a suo-moto notice regarding the irregularities in the national flag carrier, the CJ stated we need a leader for the PIA who has devotion to work and who has time to take out the PIA from the current losses. He remarked that this could only be done when the head was not serving on part-time basis as the current chairman was also secretary defense.

Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed asked the counsel to quote any example from any part of the world where the chief executive of a badly financially lost institution is serving on part-time basis.

The bench also termed the appointment of chairman as against the Section 8 and 8 (2) of the Business Rules Act 1956.

Raja Basheer, the counsel for the PIA asked to present the copy of the notification, which was presented by the counsel.

However, the bench expressed reservation stating that the words `ex-officio chairman' were used in the notification.

The counsel replied that it was an error in the notification and a corrigendum would be issued to clarify that the current chairman was not an ex-officio chairman, upon which the court gave him time to bring the corrected notification.

Later, Captain Riffat Hai, the party in the case expressed reservations on the working atmosphere for female employees in the PIA.

Afshan Ghazanfar, the counsel for Hai stated that females were being sexually harassed and victimized by the male staff and in this regard she had pointed out the name of Captain Tariq Khosa before the standing committee of the national assembly.

The CJ remarked that there should be equal dignity and respect for male and female staff of not only PIA but all the institutions.

The court issued notice to Captain Tariq Khan Khosa through HR and directed chairman PIA to appear before the court and adjourned hearing till April 3.
