US, Afghanistan reach agreement on prison transfer: Pentagon

WASHINGTON: The United States and Afghanistan reached an agreement on Saturday to transfer control of a prison housing dangerous inmates to the Kabul government, the Pentagon said.

The transfer of Parwan Detention Facility was scheduled to take place on Monday, it said in statement. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel spoke with Afghan President Hamid Karzai about the agreement by telephone.

Hagel welcomed Karzai's commitment "that the transfer will be carried out in a way that ensures the safety of the Afghan people and coalition forces by keeping dangerous individuals detained" the Pentagon said.
