OTTAWA: Canada's federal budget will be unveiled on February 11, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said Monday, predicting it would be balanced next year.
In parliament, Flaherty said the Tory government remains focused on "jobs and economic growth," and vowed to "keep taxes low and return to balanced budgets in 2015."
The timing of the budget release means it will be competing for attention with the Winter Olympics in the Russian city of Sochi that start on February 7, leading pundits to speculate it would not contain any big announcements.
Instead, they said, any "goodies" would be held until the following year when the government is expected to call a general election, and used to woo voters.
In a fiscal update in November, Flaherty said he expected to post a Can$3.7 billion (US$3.3 billion) surplus in 2015.
