ISLAMABAD: The date March 25 gives a new hope to the Pakistani nation who remembers it as a landmark in international cricket when the country's team won the 1992 World Cup 22 years ago and hopes to see the history repeated in this year's Twenty-20 CWC saying the same spirit and confidence is needed.
In the thrilling 1992 final, Pakistan beat England by 22 runs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, allowing captain Imran Khan to lift the trophy.
A way of happiness sprawled across the country when the date March 25 arrived this year as Pakistan is predicted one of the favorite team of the T20 CWC. Fans of the cricket-crazy Nation expressed their delight at the landmark date March 25, 1992 saying people born in 92 will be having plentiful of memories about this event.
A Pakistani fan Wasim Waqar remembering that WC wining day said that day I was 7 years old and it got me addicted to cricket for life.
Jamal Riaz said he wasn't born in 1992 to feel the glory. "I can only watch highlights and listen to stories but I really wish to see Pakistan win this World Cup with my own eyes," he said.
Former stalwarts hailed the performance of the national side in the ongoing T20 CWC, especially their fighting spirit against Australia as the match was seemingly slipping out of the hands of Pakistan when Glenn Maxwell was batting.
Talking to APP, Former captain who was also part of the 1992 WC victory said he remembers in 1992 when the national team arrived back he heard people enchanting that this was the second victory in the history of the country after 1947 when it came into being.
"1992 WC is lesson for everybody and our national team should learn from it and play with the same spirit," he said.
He warned the Pakistan team to keep in mind the run rates averages as it will matter a lot if Pakistan gets a tally with other teams on the table to move ahead in the tournament.
"In 1992 Pakistan got lucky to move into the semi-finals as in their final group match they were fortunate to scrape a point from the washed-out match against England eventually finishing one point ahead of Australia with an inferior run-rate," he said.
Miandad said for victory Pakistan needs to keep its batting order consistent and advised the bowlers and fielders to stop runs.
Former Test Cricketer Sarfraz Nawaz while terming the 1992 WC best in his opinion said our team should stay focused in the T20 WC and should be able to make changes in and off the field when a situation occurs.
