SUKKUR: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah has said that the PPP leadership and PPP Government in Sindh realise the need of re-modelling or re-placing the Sukkur Barrage in future to protect the economic interests of the people.
Holding meeting with PPP office bearers and party workers of Sukkur city at the Circuit House here on Friday, according to a handout, he said that Sukkur Barrage was the lifeline for the people of Sindh, which must be protected now and in future as well.
He said Sukkur is a historical city for the Sindh province, it possesses many historical structures like Sukkur Barrage, Mir Masoom Shah Minara, Lansdowne Bridge and other sites which must be projected by the provincial culture department.
The Chief Minister said that many development schemes in different sectors have been incorporated in current budget 2014-15 for Sukkur and the government has constituted District Development Committees for each District to examine, evaluate and ascertain the need basis of development works with the consensus of stake holders. He invited proposal for a scheme of Mega Development Project from the public representatives and stake holders of Sukkur for the development and beautification of the city.
While talking about the importance of Sukkur city, the Chief Minister said that Sukkur was a very important and main city of the province by virtue of Sukkur Barrage. He said that the Sukkur Barrage and irrigation system was the lifeline of the people of Sindh.
He said that ex-president Asif Ali Zardari during his tenure, had asked the Deputy Prime Minister of England for re-modelling of Sukkur Barrage while both were visiting Sukkur Barrage and added that the British Deputy Prime Minister had assured us for needful cooperation we are yet waiting for their practical step in this connection.
He said recently when he (Qaim) and Ex-president and Co-Chairman PPP Asif Ali Zardari were on a visit to China, the latter had asked the Prime Minister of China for re-modelling or replacing the Sukkur Barrage before a compulsive moment.
He said that though at present Sukkur Barrage was strong enough to
deliver the irrigation water and sustain the pressure of high and very high flood however, after all, it will lose the strength in next 50 years and an alternative of its strength will be needed.
He said that PPP Co-chairman was very conscious about the future of the people of Sindh and he is always planning in advance. He said that it is the wisdom of Ex-president Asif Ali Zardari that PPP completed its 5- year tenure in Federal Government. He said that now the leaders of other parties and provinces are following the policies of Ex-president Asif Ali Zardari. He said that it was because of Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari that today PPP was following the policies of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto with success.
Syed Qaim Ali Shah said that Chairman and Co-Chairman love the workers and always inquire about their problems. He said that they have spirit to serve the people and added that one can imagine from the fact that Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari keeping aside security risks and visiting flood affected areas of Punjab and he met with flood affected families by walking through deep water.
The Chief Minister also lauded the services of the PPP workers of Sukkur which they rendered for providing relief to the affected people in 2010 and 2011.
The Chief Minister said, the PPP Government now is giving representation to the women folk in Sindh Police and added that they have shown a satisfactory performance.
A PPP delegation which led was by President PPP Sukkur city Mushtaq Ahmed Surhayo and General Secretary PPP Dr. Arshad Mughal apprised the Chief Minister of the problems of Sukkur city, ongoing and proposed development schemes and recommended that PPP office bearers be taken on-board while preparing development schemes. The other party workers who were present in the meeting include Lal Muhammad Bhutto, Shafqat Meerani, Kazi Sami, Zubair Bhayo and Niaz Memon.
