imageSKARDU: Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif Thursday announced a compensation package of Rs 500 million for the flood affected areas of Ghanche and reiterated government's committment for rehabilitation of the flood affected people.

The Prime Minister who arrived here on a day-long visit to the flood affected areas of District Ghanche had an aerial view of the area.

He was briefed about the extent of the damages and the relief and rehabilitation measures being undertaken for the affected people.

In a briefing the Prime Minister was informed that two lives were lost, while 15 villages and standing crops over 3000 kanals in the area suffered damages. A number of houses, schools, health centers, roads and bridges were also damaged due to the raging waters.

The Prime Minister announced compensation of Rs 0.5 million for each of the affected family, Rs 150,000 each for injured and Rs 250,000 for owners of the affected house. The Prime Minister also announced a grant of Rs 150 million to NDMA to expedite relief activities.

The Prime Minister announced improvement of the Gilgit-Skardu road and said it would be extended to Khaploo.

He assured that compensation would be paid to all the affected people including the loss of their livestock.

Addressing a gathering of the flood affected here at Ghanche Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said the government was committed to uplift all the underdeveloped areas of the country and was particularly focussing on development of Gilgit-Baltistan.

He noted the valuable services rendered by the people of the area for the development and progress of Pakistan and assured that the government would never leave them alone at this critical time.

The Prime Minister said the government would provide all resources for the development of these areas. He said the government was committed to ensure provision of basic facilities particularly for the education and health sectors.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif while referring to the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) said it was a guarantor for progress and prosperity of Gilgit-Baltistan and said it would greatly benefit the area and generate employment.

He said Gilgit-Baltistan was a heaven for the tourists and asked the Chief Minister to take up the challenge and provide maximum facilities to the tourists from across the country, and abroad, so that they can visit the place and enjoy the natural beauty.

The Prime Minister also met with flood affected people and distributed relief goods amongst them. These included food and other items to help them cope with the natural calamity. The flood affected appreciated the Prime Minister for visiting the area and the relief measures being undertaken by the government.

Governor Gilgit Baltistan Ch Birjees Tahir and Chief Minister Hafiz Hafeez ur Rehman in their brief address reiterated the committment of the government for the uplift of the area and assured swift relief and rehabilitation measures.
