RIO DE JANEIRO: Brazilian authorities have declared a state of emergency in 10 municipalities in the southern Santa Catarina state, where nearly 18,000 people have fled severe flooding.
The Civil Defence said on its website that the flooding affected more than 440,000 people in 46 municipalities, with 17,722 people being evacuated and 984 losing their homes.
No one has died or been seriously injured in the flooding, it added.
The heavy rains hit Wednesday night and were expected to continue for at least another 24 hours.
