World Trade Organisation is a threat to developing countries because it would destroy the smaller countries economically and millions of people would be rendered jobless besides closure of industry, said speakers at a seminar on 'Globalisation, Growing Poverty, and Labour Movement, here on Friday.
Mehfoof Khan Shujaat (Communist Mazdoor Kisan Party), Sajjad Haider Zaidi, Advocate (Amnesty International), Babur Soekarno (District Bar Multan), Mashkoor Sabiri, Suhail Javed (Labour Party), M.A Bhutta (Seraiki National Party),Ali Mehdi Gardezi (Seraiki Awami Party), and Comrade Yamin Qureshi spoke on the occasion.
They said that participants of Saarc conference should sign 'bilateral' trade treaties to escape from the clutches of WTO which is a poisonous snake and it would bite all smaller countries.
They stressed the need for trading among smaller states according to their own standards and quality.
They said that major countries have plotted to keep the developing and poor countries under their thumb by further weakening their economy and supplying their products in these countries.
They said that Pakistan should develop and strengthen its agriculture to save itself from the ravages of WTO regime and it should develop trade with India, Iran, China and other neighbouring countries.
Mehfooz Khan said that unemployment has caused increase in the rate of crimes, suicides and other social evils.
