Jordan's foreign minister said Sunday he would discuss with his Kuwaiti counterpart the possibility of renewing a Kuwaiti oil grant to Amman during an imminent visit to the emirate.
"The renewal or non-renewal of the oil grant from Kuwait will be discussed during the meeting" of the Joint Higher Committee slated for Tuesday and Wednesday, Marwan Moasher told the state-run Kuwaiti News Agency (KUNA).
The Jordanian chief diplomat and Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammad al-Sabah will lead their countries' delegations to the first meeting of the committee.
The committee will discuss co-operation agreements in the fields of trade, investments, transportation, aviation and education, Moasher said.
High on the agenda will be Jordan's request to renew an oil grant of 25,000 barrels per day (bpd) offered by Kuwait since the halt in Iraqi oil supplies to Amman following last March's US-led invasion of Iraq, Moasher said.
However, he added, the oil grant is not the factor that governs the "strategic" ties between the two countries.
Moasher also said that Jordan "strongly backs" any move towards joining the oil-rich Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC), but no official request had been made.
"Obviously, we in Jordan strongly support any move to join the GCC, but this decision is for the alliance to make in the future," he said.
But Moasher said that Amman has not made an official request to join the GCC which groups Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
