The vice-chancellor of the University of Karachi, Dr Pirzada Qasim, has assured the teachers that the university would gradually be brought out of the present policy of ad hocism, and all efforts would be made to establish discipline in the university campus.
He was speaking at a party organised by KU teachers on Tuesday in his honour on his assumption of the office of the KU vice-chancellor.
Dr Pirzada Qasim said he would ensure regular meetings of the academic council and the university syndicates so that the decision-making conforms to the rules and regulations laid down in the statute to regulate all administrative and academic initiatives.
He said he had no ambitions to remain in position of power, but what had motivated him is to make the university a seat of higher learning and scholarship.
He invited his "colleagues" to join hands, and make the dream come true.
He said the key to success in teaching institutions was to strike a balance between the rights and privileges of the teachers and the students, and that he intended to do, to bring about a change in the atmosphere.
The KU vice-chancellor said the teachers should realise their role, and the students their purpose of coming to the university, and work to achieve their respective objectives.
Dr Pirzada Qasim said he would consider demands of the teachers for their promotion to higher grades, increments, appointments, promotion, and filling up of vacant positions at his earliest.
Earlier, KUTS President Professor Dr Suhail Barakati welcomed the vice-chancellor.
