A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed among the Lahore City Government, World Wide Funds for Nature Pakistan (WWF-P) and Waste Busters for the running of a zero waste campaign in as many as 150 city government and private schools.
DCO Lahore Khalid Sultan signed the MoU on behalf of the City Government, while Ali Habib and Asif Farooqi signed on behalf of WWF-Pakistan and Waste Busters, respectively.
The campaign would be run under the umbrella of "friends of the environment clubs", which have already been established by the city district government's environment department in 150 private and government schools.
The WWF-P would arrange 150 dustbins with a campaign message painted on them for public sector schools.
Informative literature and activity books for students would also be developed. During the campaign, awareness sessions and lectures would be delivered in all schools from time to time on recycling and zero waste. Student trips to nature parks will also be arranged from the money generated through sale of recyclable goods.
The city government would start placing bins in the schools from the first week of February. The Waste Busters would carryout the collection of recyclable goods from the schools.
This was the first public-private partnership in the field of environmental awareness.
The MoU would stand for one year, ie till January 2005. The city government was also planning to erect billboards and hoarding for the awareness of environment in collaboration with the private sector in the near future.
