In recent years, there is a growing trend in China towards kite-flying. Weifang city, east China's Shandong Province hosted its 20th annual kite festival last year that attracted about 100,000 kite enthusiasts from home and abroad.
Nineteen international kite festivals have been held in Weifang since 1984, and the city was drawing increasing foreign investment while showcasing its kites to overseas visitors.
Forty-seven kite-flying teams from 20 foreign countries, including the United States, Japan and the Republic of Korea, and 24 domestic teams participated in the competition, attracting nearly three million visitors.
Kite-making in Weifang, known as "Kite Capital," can be traced back to the late 16th century and the early 17th century, Weifang has conducted cultural and economic exchanges with over 100 countries and regions.
Statistics show that nearly 700 co-operative contracts have been signed in the city since 1995, with total investments of 1.5 billion US dollars.
In Beijing, some 1,000 representatives from 100 Chinese enterprises spent a week flying kites in 20 scenic spots and universities of Beijing to show their confidence in combating severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars) last year.
During the recent spring festival, local and foreign visitors enjoyed kites, flying high above the Tian'anmen Square, near the Great Hall of the Peoples.
