The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has decided to strengthen Telecommunications Engineering Department of the Comsats Institute of Information Technology, Islamabad.
In this regard, a project costing about Rs 25 million, submitted by Comsats has been approved in HEC's Departmental Development Working Party (DDWP) meeting held at the HEC campus Islamabad presided over by Engineer Dr M. Akram Sheikh, executive director HEC.
The main objective of the project is not only to strengthen the Telecommunication Engineering Department of the CIIT, Islamabad but also the procurement of equipment for the teaching and projects labs, including Digital and Analog Electronics Lab, Digital and Analog Communications Lab. and Networking Data Communication and Simulation Labs.
It is hoped that the strengthening of the Department of Telecommunication Engineering would provide teaching/research facilities to approx. 600-700 students, 15-20 teaching faculty and is likely to significantly contribute in the production of approx. 200 graduates (Bachelors and Master) in two years time.
Furthermore, the facilities, established under the project, are likely to result in 5-8 research publications within three years time i.e. by 2007-08 and undertaking quite a few contract research projects which would strengthen the academia-industry linkages and improve the social returns of the scheme.
The project aims at providing basic equipment for the experiments in the labs, so as to provide hands on experience to the students and faculty and providing an environment of learning for the students and expose them to the latest technologies and a chance to practice.
This initiative would help educate students so that they are prepared not only to contribute to further growth of the telecom sector but also to comprehend and contribute in providing services and capabilities that it will offer.
It would act as a catalyst to promote technological innovation and develop new applications.
The project is basically a human resource development project. As the academic programmes take shape, there will be steady flow of the graduating students coming out of the institute and coming into the economic mainstream.
IMPORTANT PROGRAMME: It is envisaged, however, that in the years to come, this programme would emerge as an important programme of telecommunication learning. It is estimated that from now on, every year around 175-180 students will be inducted in BS programme, 35 in MS programme and 25 in research areas.
From 2005, it is expected that a steady stream of over 200 students will be graduating in telecommunication engineering and the department will produce 5-6 research papers per year in three years from CIIT, Islamabad.
