Federal Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed on Thursday called upon Ulema and Mashaikh to play their role for maintaining culture of tolerance and unity in the country.
He stated this while addressing inaugural session of two-day 25th Annual Hussainia Conference being held under the auspices of the Markazi Imam Hussain Council. The theme of the conference is "The teachings of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and Unity of Muslim Ummah."
Sheikh Rashid said: "We are already facing various problems, and there is a need to pull out the country from sectarianism and extremism."
He said Islam was spread through knowledge and wisdom, calling upon them to promote culture of tolerance and patience among the masses.
The minister said media can play a vital role in promoting education which develops tolerance and patience, adding at present, there are seven private television channels working in Pakistan, while 13 more are in the pipeline.
Speaking on the occasion, AJK President Sardar Mohammad Anwar said Muslim Ummah is passing through a very difficult situation, adding: "The nation can overcome all the challenges by forging unity and harmony among its ranks."
He said the dream of unity can only be materialised through message of peace and tranquillity, adding all the Muslims believe in one God and one Prophet (PBUH) which are fundamental of our unity.
Expressing the need for taking practical steps to forge unity and brotherhood among their ranks, he called upon the religious scholars, representing all schools of thought to play their role for this purpose.
Sardar Anwar said: "We liberated our country through unity and solidarity, and we should try to work together for development and progress of the country."
Pir Naseer-Uddin-Naseer, Syed Mohammad Rooh-ul-Amin, Pir of Manki Sharif, Mulana Izhar-ul-Haq Bukhari, Professor Riaz Hussain, Dr Ghazanfar Mehdi, and other speakers said sectarian harmony is essential to forging unity among the people and sacrifices rendered by Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) can play an important role in achieving this noble objective.
They said this conference will play vital role in eliminating sectarianism in the country.
