College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) and Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (BCPS) will be organising a joint conference "Learning and practising medicine in the 21st century" in Karachi from March 7 to 9.
The CPSP president Professor M. Sultan Farooqui in a statement here on Thursday said president Pervez Musharraf is expected to inaugurate the moot, while premier Jamali will be the chief guest at the convocation to award degrees to eminent foreign guests and local specialists on March 6.
This will be the third conference being jointly organised by the two countries, he said mentioning that it also coincides with the silver jubilee of the CPSP department of medical education.
With regard to co-ordination among the two institutions, he said both CPSP and BCPS have a considerably long history of co-operation and had held joint conferences in the past too.
It was mentioned that some 1500 delegates from all over the country and abroad are expected to participate in the event.
Among others a five-member team comprising deputy regional director WHO-EMRO region Dr Abidi Jana; director health systems development, WHO, Dr Belgacem Sabri, regional advisor, WHO, Dr Ghulam Al Shaikh, WHO representative in Tehran, Dr Akbari and WHO advisor Dr Samin Siddiqui.
According to him BCPS is also participating in a big way and a delegation of over 300 participants and guests are expected in the conference from Bangladesh. Over 200 persons have already got themselves registered and nearly 100 abstracts have been submitted.
Some five different state-of-the-art lectures have been planned for the occasion.
These would include one honouring eminent teacher of the past W.A. Burki. A memorial lecture to pay tribute to Dr Burki will be delivered by Dr Sabri on "New challenges in medial education.
Meanwhile, M.A.H. Siddiqui Memorial Lecture will be presented by Dr Akbari followed by Mohammad Ibrahim Memorial Lecture by Professor Mohammad.
Abdul Mobin Khan on chronic hepatitis and Mohammad Asiruddin Memorial lecture by Professor M.A. Majid on thyroid surgery.
Besides these, a special lecture on medical education will also be delivered by Dr Ghanim Al Shaikh on "Accreditation of medical education" and will be titled as Fazal Elahi Memorial Lecture.
Professor Farooqui said that in addition to the above programme, the scientific programme comprises six pre-conference workshops, 10 invited lectures, six to eight speciality sessions will run simultaneously and over 200 papers would be presented during the same. Poster sessions are also part of the three-day event.
To facilitate the intending participants a conference secretariat has been set up at the CPSP premises in Karachi.
Other prominent feature of the conference would include a cultural programme, an exhibition of medical and allied organisations and publication of a souvenir befitting the occasion.
