District Nazim Multan Riaz Hussain Qureshi has said at least, 500 ghost teachers were detected, who are habitual absentees, but they were drawing their salaries regularly.
Talking to a delegation of the World Bank comprising Saman Aidee, Shahid Kardar, and Khalid Ikram here on Tuesday, District Nazim said a drive of surprise checking would be launched from March 1 to ensure the attendance of doctors, para-medical staff and teachers in basic health units, rural health centres, and primary schools.
The Nazim said the children of the privileged class study in English medium schools, while poor children in government primary schools where no basic facilities, and they study under open sky. However, they get more marks than privileged class students.
He said it is a great injustice to get admission through entry test while students of rural areas do not enjoy even 10 percent facilities as were available to the students of urban areas.
He said 60 percent students quit their primary education due to poverty, while a large number of villages have no electricity, and 70 percent roads are unmetalled.
He stressed the need for the provision of equal opportunities for progress and development.
