Acting President Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) and Amir Jamat-e-Islami (JI), Qazi Hussain Ahmed on Friday demanded of government to refrain from conducting operations in Wana area of Northern Waziristan.
"These people were invited by Pakistan and other international powers to initiate Jihad in Afghanistan against Soviet Union. These people are freedom fighters and enjoy overwhelming support in the tribal belt", he said and added that it was ridiculous to depict them as terrorists.
Talking to newsmen after arriving from Peshawar at Karachi International Airport, he said component parties of MMA were discussing strategy in order to stop military operation in tribal areas and added that after Ashura, they would have another meeting to discuss how to respond.
"The General Council meeting of MMA will meet on March 5 or 6, somewhere in the country to discuss repercussions of Wana operation and to devise a strategy", he said without elaborating how they will react to the situation.
Criticising President Pervez Musharraf, he alleged that the President supported US against Afghanistan, declared independence movement in Kashmir as terrorism, humiliated nuclear scientists and still he was claiming that there would be no compromise on national interests.
Replying a question regarding nomination of opposition leader, he said MMA was the biggest part both in National Assembly and the Senate and having opposition leaders in both the houses was solely its right. "We will approach the government in this regard", he said.
