The first convocation of Isra University (Hyderabad campus) was held here at the university's campus situated on Hala road.
Chancellor of the university Professor Dr Muhammad Saleh Memon awarded degrees to 143 graduates of Medicine, Allied Medical Sciences and Computer & Management Sciences.
Nine gold medals and sixteen silver medals were also given to students for displaying best performance and merit during their academic career.
The Chancellor of the university, in his brief speech, called upon the graduates to stand firm on their oath and serve the ailing humanity without making any difference of cast or creed.
He particularly drew their attention to the need of serving those living in far-flung areas and who are deprived of modern day facilities.
He called upon the government to support institutions engaged in humanitarian services in less developed areas so that they could expend their activities.
Earlier, Isra Islamic Foundation president Professor Dr Ghulam Qadir Kazi, giving brief history of the foundation, said it was founded in 1990 and all its nine founding members are holders of Ph.D., or equivalent qualifications with working experience in reputable universities of the world.
He said the multifaceted services of the foundation includes Isra University, Isra University Hospital, Isra University Welfare Hospital, a chain of Al-Ibrahim Eye Hospitals at Malir, Kunri and Kharan, International Blindness Prevention Programme in eight developing countries of Asia and Africa, Isra Schools and Isra Quran Academy.
He said it is worth mentioning that we are the pioneers in introducing the most advance Refractive Eye Surgery of 'LASIK' in Pakistan in 1998. The foundation has the honour to start the Fetal Intra-Uterine Medical and Surgical Intervention in Gynaecology and Obstetrics in Hyderabad.
He said, besides this, the university is organising medical and surgical camps in rural areas.
He said he believes that some modest contribution of government towards the capital cost and donation from Zakat fund will further facilitate our work. Vice Chancellor of Isra University Professor Dr Asadullah Kazi, speaking on the occasion, said Isra is the first private university in Sindh, which is holding first convocation outside Karachi.
He said, from now on, the university convocation would be held on the last Saturday of February every year.
Giving comprehensive details of working of the university and its various faculties, he announced that Isra university endowment fund has been created and the president of Isra Islamic Foundation has granted one million rupees as the seed money for this fund.
This grant is over and above the endowment fund that Isra Islamic Foundation has set aside for the Isra University.
He said Isra would welcome donations from philanthropists and other government and not governmental organisations in this fund which would be exclusively used for the well-being of the students.
