The Chairman Senate, Muhammadmian Soomro has stressed upon finding more markets and going in for extensive exhibitions for promotion of Pakistani products in the international market.
He was speaking in the concluding session of three-day 'Plastic Asia 2004' at a local hotel on Sunday.
Soomro agreed to assertions of speakers that reducing tariff of electricity was vital for promotion of plastic as well as general industry of the country.
He also pledged on the occasion to support the plastic industry in its demands on reduction of certain tariffs pertaining to it.
Chairman Senate while emphasising on increased value addition of country's products stated a number of measures and precautions needed to be taken in disposing plastic waste.
Soomro mentioned that there has been an upward trend in the use of hydrocarbon and polymer since 1860, which stated that plastic had substantially replaced steel, wood and glass in this period.
The Chairman Senate congratulated the plastic industry for holding second 'Plastic Asia' exhibition and stressed that event should be made an annual feature. Soomro appreciating business community terming it as asset of the country.
S M Tariq, President Pakistan Plastic Manufacturers Association (PPMA) Punjab, in his opening address on the occasion while referring to the success of the event stated that 60 companies had participated this year as compared to 42 in the previous similar show.
Tariq, while pointing towards the scope of industry internationally, said the ample opportunities were present, provided government rendered adequate support to the industry.
Punjab president PPMA said that China, Malaysia and India are major players internationally of the plastic industry.
S M Tariq at the occasion demanded of the government to reduce taxes on plastic industry while asking to cut electricity prices.
Saqib Mohyuddin, Chairman National Productivity Organisation, speaking on the occasion stated that besides providing employment directly or indirectly to 0.6 million people, the industry has also catered to exports worth Rs 7 billion.
He stated that the NPO was taking measures for the revival of power loom sector. "With a 500 loom project to be started in Hyderabad (Sindh) there are total 0.25 million looms presently running in the country", he added.
Anjam Nisar, President Lahore Chamber of Commerce &Industry (LCCI) in his address stated that steps should be taken to introduce country's plastic goods in the international market.
LCCI president on the occasion also asked the government to reduce duty on raw material of plastic industry.
Earlier, Soomro went around stalls of a number of companies who have displayed their products in 'Plastic Asia 2004'.He also distributed shields to participants at the occasion.
