Several thousand Bangladeshi traders went on strike for the second successive day Wednesday demanding "tough punishment" for criminals targeting entrepreneurs.
The strike, called by the Sadarghat Sammilito Byaboshayee Samity, which represents several hundred big and small traders, staged protest marches in three major areas of the old parts of Dhaka, the capital's business hub.
The Samity action was backed by the Businessmen's Unity Council, the main traders' group of Dhaka.
"Hang the culprits", angry businessmen shouted as they demanded justice for the grisly murders of prominent businessman Shamsul Huq, 56, and his son Russel Sheikh, 29, in the Gazipur district, 30 kilometres (18 miles), north of Dhaka.
On Sunday, police recovered the remains of Huq, president of the Dhaka-based Sadarghat Cloth Association, which has over 100 members and that of his son. Both vanished Friday and their beheaded remains were found outside Dhaka. They were buried in their village homes late Monday.
"We want to live, we have to live and need security," said Monir Hossain, secretary of Bastra Byaboshayee Samity, another trade body representing 42 groups.
