Sindh High Court on Friday was informed by the Deputy Attorney General that interior ministry has issued instructions to Punjab government regarding shifting back Ahmed Omer Sheikh, a convict in US journalist Daniel Pearl kidnapping and murder case, to Hyderabad jail.
This he stated while submitting a statement before SHC's division bench comprising Justice Wahid Bux Brohi and Justice Rehmat Hussain Jaffery on application filed by counsel of Ahmed Omer Sheikh seeking production of his client before court.
However, it was observed that whether those instructions have been carried out or not is yet to be ascertained.
The court after statement of federal attorney adjourned the hearing observing the non-appearance of defence counsel Abdul Waheed Katpar who is said to be busy in other cases in Balochistan High Court.
The intimation notice was also issued to Rai Bashir, counsel of appellant Fahad Nasim, and the matter was put off to a date to be fixed by the office.
The miscellaneous application was filed in main appeals of Omer Sheikh, among other convicts Syed Salman Saqib, Sheikh Muhammad Adil and Fahad Naseem.
It was submitted in application that his client was shifted from Hyderabad jail to Punjab and pleaded court to issue order for Omer's production.
The main accused Ahmed Omer Sheikh was sentenced to death on charges of kidnapping and killing US journalist, and his three accomplices were sentenced to life imprisonment, with fine of Rs 500,000 each by ATC Hyderabad on July 15, 2002. The court also directed accused to pay Rs two million to victim's widow Mariane Pearl.
