Iraqi politician Ahmed Chalabi, whose home and office were raided by US forces and Iraqi police this week, was passing classified US intelligence on to Iran, CBS television reported, citing senior US officials.
Chalabi personally handed Iranian intelligence officers sensitive information that could "get Americans killed," the network said Thursday, noting that the evidence against Chalabi was said to be "rock solid."
A US official said in Friday's Wall Street Journal that Chalabi passed sensitive information to Iran. "That's absolutely true," the official said on condition of anonymity. Washington is leading a high-level inquiry to determine who in the US government could have given the highly sensitive information to Chalabi, according to media reports.
A Chalabi aide dismissed the accusations as "nonsense" and said they were part of a strategy by the US Central Intelligence Agency to discredit Chalabi.
The revelations came shortly after US forces and Iraqi police raided Chalabi's home and office in Baghdad Thursday.
